URBAN HEAT ISLANDS
Quito’s Heat Islands study is an investigation that aims to analyze the presence of urban heat islands in the central plateau of Quito and its evolution in the city of Quito since 2010. This research has been carried out and coordinated by the Quito Urban Information Center - CIUQ. We have had the active collaboration of prestigious researchers.
The first phase consisted of the multitemporal analysis that determines the presence of heat islands in Quito on years 2010, 2015 and 2020. The analysis was made using remote sensing techniques. The relationship between the increase in temperature, the advance of the urban stain and land use change in the period 2010-2020 was analyzed too.

PHASE 1
PHASE 2
Second phase objective was to identify and select sections for in situ thermal measurements. These measures were taken at 1.5 meters of altitude and were studied to determinate a relationship between temperature and the density of trees per square meter.
PHASE 3
The third phase, consisted of the local Climate Zone classification in the 13 study areas, the assessment of the urban geometry. Calculation of the Sky View Factor, Aspect Ratio, construction area, permeable area, impermeable, roughness height of elements and soil classification. It was also considered the assessment of thermal properties, surface albedo (short wave) and anthropogenic heat.

PAULINA CUBILLO BETANCOURT
Geographer and Environmental Engineer from ESPE University in 2005, with a master's degree in Environmental Management Systems in 2008 from SEK International University; master's degree in Geographic Information Systems development from the University of Seville in Spain in 2012; master's degree in Territorial Planning (Laude) from the University of Tor Vergata in Rome - Italy in 2015; and with a specialization in Data Science, in Costa Rica in 2020. She is currently the General Coordinator of CIUQ.
PAOLA MAIGUA LÓPEZ
Doctor in Architecture and Urbanism, Technology, Environment and Sustainability from the University of Brasilia and Master in City Government with a mention in Urban Centrality and Historic Areas from FLACSO - Ecuador.
She has taken part in the elaboration of Development Plans and Territorial Ordering. She is coordinator at MIDUVI of the Comprehensive Territorial Intervention Program (PITI) San Lorenzo-Esmeraldas, Nuevo Rocafuerte-Orellana, Puerto López-Manabí and Zonal Director of Studies in the Works Contracting Service-SECOB, Zone 9.
She is part of the group of researchers at LASUS-Laboratory of Sustainability Applied to Architecture and Urbanism of the University of Brasilia.
She has knowledge in Bioclimatism applied to architecture and urban planning, experience in eco-efficient buildings, simulation models of thermal, light and acoustic comfort.
She is currently linked to the investigations,
"Project atlas Local Climate Zone of the cities of Ecuador"; "Crime in large buildings, satellite city of Águas Claras - Brasília"; “To evapotranspiração (ET) in the formation of the urban heat ill (ICU) in Brasilia”; and "The effects of arborization and urban vegetation in the urban climate of the City of Quito".
DIANA ORELLANA VALDEZ
Architect and Master in Urban Planning from the Polytechnic University of Catalonia. She is currently studying a Master's Degree in Socio-Environmental Studies at FLACSO-Ecuador. She is a University professor at the Faculty of Architecture of the University of Cuenca and the Indoamérica Technological University and directs the radio program Diario de una Peatona on FLACSO Radio.
Some of her research projects have been the Certification Method for Sustainable Housing Construction in Cuenca and the Evolution of green infrastructure in four case studies: Maryland, London, Bologna and Barcelona.
Her publications: Sustainable and safe building certification in 2018; The influence of urban tree vegetation to reduce the level of pollution and achieve climate comfort; An approach to characterizing the heat island in Cuenca -Ecuador; Sustainable urban planning and evaluation methods; Changes in the valuation of nature in the Metropolitan Region of Barcelona.
She is currently researching the influence of green infrastructure on heat island mitigation in Quito.
Geographer and Environmental Engineer by the ESPE University in 2022. She collaborated in the development of the base information for this project, while carrying out his pre-professional practices.
